MADERA - In June 2016, State Center Community College District (SCCCD) passed Measure "C", a $485 million facilities bond that will develop new and improved facilities at Fresno City College, Reedley College, Clovis Community College, Madera and Oakhurst Community College Centers'. Funding for a new West Fresno campus and a first responder’s camp in Southeast Fresno are also included in the bond.

The first Measure C facility scheduled for construction is now complete. A ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Center for Agriculture and Technology at the Madera Community College Center (MCCC) was held last Thursday afternoon at the college campus located on Avenue 12 in Madera.

LOS ANGELES  -  Actor-producer John Cho and producer-actress-writer Issa Rae announced the 92nd Oscars^® nominations today (January 13), live from the David Geffen Theater at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, opening later this year. Cho and Rae announced the nominees in 8 categories at 5:18 a.m. PT, and the remaining 16 categories at 5:30 a.m. PT. 

Academy members from each of the 17 branches vote to determine the nominees in their respective categories – actors nominate actors, film editors nominate film editors, etc. In the Animated Feature Film and International Feature Film categories, nominees are selected by a vote of multi-branch screening committees. All voting members are eligible to select the Best Picture nominees.

Active members of the Academy are eligible to vote for the winners in all 24 categories beginning Thursday, January 30, through Tuesday, February 4.

The 92nd Oscars will be held on Sunday, February 9, 2020, at the Dolby^® Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center^® in Hollywood, and will be televised live on ABC at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT. “Oscars: Live on the Red Carpet” will air at 6:30 p.m. ET/3:30 p.m. PT. The Oscars also will be televised live in more than 225 countries and territories worldwide.

ABOUT THE ACADEMY
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is a global community of more than 8,000 of the most accomplished artists, filmmakers and executives working in film. FRESNO -  Joseph Vasquez Jr., 32, of Modesto, was sentenced today to 26 years and eight months in prison for an operation that distributed methamphetamine from Modesto to Juneau, Alaska, U.S. Attorney McGregor W. Scott announced. According to court documents and evidence produced at trial, Vasquez was part of a drug trafficking organization operating in the Central Valley, Alaska, and Tacoma, Washington between Jan. 1, 2015, and April 11, 2018.

As a result of the year-long investigation, 45 pounds of methamphetamine, 4 pounds of heroin and 3 pounds of cocaine were seized. On Oct. 3, 2019, after a three-day trial, a federal jury in Fresno found Vasquez guilty of conspiring to distribute methamphetamine and distribution of methamphetamine.

FRESNO  -   Elfego Alcala, 47, Tamilene Cisneros, 49, and Aida Corona, 38, of Visalia, pleaded guilty today to conspiracy and production of false identification documents, U.S. Attorney McGregor W. Scott announced. According to court documents, between Feb. 2018 and Aug. 8, 2018, the defendants conspired to produce and sell false identification documents.

On March 12, 2018, they engaged in a transaction in which they manufactured and sold three false Lawful Permanent Resident (LPR or “green card”) and three false Social Security cards that appeared to be issued by and under the authority of the United States.

FRESNO - The Fresno Police Department will conduct DUI saturation patrols on January 10th, 2020 aimed at getting impaired drivers off the road. In addition, the Fresno Police Department will hold a DUI/Driver’s License Checkpoint on January 11th, 2020 at an undisclosed location within the city limits.

DUI checkpoints and saturation patrols are done in locations with a higher frequency of DUI-related collisions and arrests. During the checkpoint, officers will be looking for signs of alcohol and/or drug impairment, with officers checking drivers for proper licensing.

FRESNO - The Board of Directors of the California Food Expo (formerly the Fresno Food Expo) announced today that they have elected to dissolve the 501 (c) (6) organization and close its operations effective January 31, 2020, citing financial and organizational constraints.

In its nine-year lifetime, the Expo created a nucleus of businesses and individuals who have served as stewards of the San Joaquin Valley and California’s rich food industry. While the California Food Expo will itself no longer operate, the efforts it began will continue to serve as a catalyst for future collaborations, the sharing of resources, and new business opportunities.
