MADERA – Madera South High School celebrated its ninth homecoming Friday night with a 21-14 win over Mission Oak of Tulare. There was also a parade, a crowning of a new Homecoming King and Queen, and the whole event was led off by former Madera Unified educator Carles Beckett.
The parade began on Stadium Road at Olive Avenue. The Stallion band stepped off first followed by the club and class floats. The Fashion Club won first place with their club float which included a fully restored 1963 Split Window Volkswagen Van. The Class of 2022 won first place for their 1980’s theme float.
Ushering in this year's homecoming parade as Grand Marshal was an educator who has dedicated his life to the community of Madera for the last 65 years, Mr. Carles Beckett. Over the span of his career, Beckett has worked for every superintendent Madera Unified has ever had. He is currently “doing whatever they need me to.” The assignments may be anything for subbing for an administrator, to mentorship or using his decades of experience to navigate through whatever challenge is at hand.
Beckett explains that it was the Madera South Satellite Campus that had led him to work at the district office alongside Dr. Julie O’Kane, “Julie came to me and said we need to get this bond together so we can complete the Madera South campus.” Mr. Beckett worked to put together what would come to be called the “Triple-A Plan.”
A decade of Stallion’s thanks, Mr. Beckett, for all of your years of service and dedication to our district and your personal role in the young history of Madera South High School.
Later the varsity football team took the field to follow up that 49-24 win last week against Fresno High School with another superb performance over Tulare’s Mission Oak High School with a 21-14 win. At half time a new Homecoming King and Queen were crowned.
The 2019 Homecoming Queen was cheerleader Joslynn Johnson. Johnson is the daughter of Jennifer and Efrain Rodriguez. She is a two year varsity cheer captain and a three year varsity cheerleader. She hopes to attend California State University, San Diego and study physical education.
The 2019 Homecoming King was Xavier Lemus. Lemus is the son of Celia Garnica and Javier Lemus Sr. He is a member of the track and field team. His college plans include two years at a local community college then transferring to California State University, Sacramento and pursuing a degree in Computer Engineering.
Next up on the homecoming schedule will be Madera High School, which will be held on October 4th. Their 10:30AM parade will kick off on Howard Road at the Madera Unified School District Office and travel to Madera High School. Their opponent that night will be CMAC Rival Sanger High School.
