Sheriff Bates was not only a cornerstone of Madera County law enforcement but also a symbol of unwavering dedication, courage, and integrity.

Sheriff Bates was renowned for his decisive leadership during the 1976 Chowchilla school bus kidnapping, a crisis that drew national attention. His steadfast commitment to justice and his community left an indelible mark on Madera County. Beyond his official duties, he was a devoted husband to Freda June Ball, his partner in life and service for 57 years.

Sheriff Bates leaves behind a legacy defined by fearless leadership, unwavering principles, and a lifelong commitment to public service. He will be remembered not only for his professional accomplishments but also for his profound impact on the lives of those he served. His passing is a significant loss to those who loved him, as well as to our department and the entire community; he will be deeply missed.
