Fresno County DA Charges Suspect in Hit & Run Collision that Killed a 10-Year-Old Boy

FRESNO - Last Wednesday the Fresno County District Attorney’s Office filed two felony charges against Raymond Jay Celaya (62, of Fresno) related to a hit and run collision that killed a 10-year-old boy near Woodward Park earlier this year.

It is alleged that on June 17, 2021, at around 11:30 p.m., Celaya was driving his car southbound on Friant Road when he struck and killed a 10-year-old boy crossing the street at the intersection of Friant and Fort Washington roads. Emergency crews responded to the scene, made every effort to revive the stricken child, and transported him to Valley Children’s Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

Immediately after the collision, Celaya failed to stop and fled the scene. Celaya was arrested a day later when the Fresno Police Department received a tip from a citizen regarding the location of a damaged vehicle that matched the description of the car involved in the collision.

The felony complaint alleges that Celaya committed the following offenses:

1. LEAVING THE SCENE OF AN ACCIDENT - DEATH OR PERMANENT SERIOUS INJURY
[Vehicle Code section 20001(b)(2), a felony]

2. VEHICLE MANSLAUGHTER - GROSS NEGLIGENCE-UNLAWFUL MANNER

[Penal Code section 192(c)(1), a felony]

If convicted of all charges and allegations, Celaya faces a possible sentence of up to 7 years in state prison.,
Celaya, who is out of custody on bond, is scheduled to be arraigned in the Fresno County Superior Court
on August 23, 2021.
