Ten Middle School Students Injuried in Golf Cart Accident

FRESNO - Traffic officers from the Fresno Police Department were dispatched to the Granite Ridge Middle School at the Clovis North School Complex Monday morning regarding an injury accident on the campus proper.

Upon arrival, officers found ten injured students, ranging in age from 13 to 14 years, on the campus walkway between two buildings. Clovis Unified School District Police were present as well as several school administrators.

The preliminary investigation of the accident revealed that a 13 year old student with special needs jumped into a nearby golf cart and accelerating forward. One teacher was heard to yell, "Get out of the way" just before the students were ran over by the cart. The golf cart was used on campus to complete various tasks by campus staff and did not need a key to operate.

There were several students on the walkway between buildings because it was at a time that students were in transit between classes. The 13 year old struck 9 students and then was stopped by crashing into a tree in the flowerbed of the walkway.

The injuries sustained by two of the students were considered serious as one of the students had lacerations, contusions, and complaint of pain injuries about the body. The other student had a broken leg as a result of the accident. The other 7 students injured did not have serious injuries.

The injured students were treated at the following local hospitals: Clovis Community Hospital, St Agnes Medical Center, CRMC, and Valley Children’s Hospital. The 13 year old driver also received moderate injuries in the crash.

The driver of the golf cart was treated at a local hospital. The accident is still under investigation and at this time it is not known if charges will be filed against the 13 year old driver.

Clovis Unified has not said why the cart was left unattended or if the student with special needs was supervised..
