Madera Man Accused of Attempted Homicide of Correctional Officer Under Investigation

CORCORAN – Two correctional officers are recovering from injuries sustained during an attack by an inmate Tuesday at Substance Abuse Treatment Facility and State Prison, Corcoran (SATF).

At 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 20, inmate Jose Moreno, 24, approached a correctional officer from behind and began striking him in the back of the head with a horseshoe. Staff immediately responded to the area to stop the attack. Moreno threw an additional two horseshoes at responding staff, striking another correctional officer in his face and arm. Staff used pepper spray to quell the attack.

Both correctional officers were taken by ambulance to outside hospitals for treatment. They have since been released and are in good spirits, recovering at home. Moreno did not sustain any injuries and has been transferred to another institution where he is being held in the prison’s Administrative Segregation Unit as the attack is investigated. The Office of the Inspector General has been notified.

Moreno was received by the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation from Madera County on October 18, 2017, to serve a three-year sentence for making criminal threats to cause great bodily injury or death.
