California Historical Society Lights Up the Old U.S. Mint for Major Gala Celebrating The Honorable George P. Shultz

SAN FRANCISCO -  The California Historical Society (CHS) today announced it will host a major Gala dinner celebrating The Honorable George P. Shultz at the Old U.S. Mint on January 11, 2018.

The black-tie event will occur on the 263rd birthday of Alexander Hamilton, the first U.S. Treasury Secretary. In 1972, as America's 62nd Treasury Secretary, George Shultz helped save the Old U.S. Mint—now a National Historical Landmark—from sale and destruction, ensuring the powerful legacy of the Treasury in the western United States.

"Secretary Shultz has had a distinguished career serving five presidents, holding four key Cabinet positions, and overseeing some of the nation's most historic, pivotal moments," said Dr. Anthea Hartig, Executive Director of CHS, adding that "Dr. Shultz is a true statesman who has dedicated his life serving our nation and advancing important causes."

A distinguished group of leaders in business, education, government, and philanthropy have come together to plan and support the Gala in celebrating one of our State's true civic legends, in one of the West's most significant historic buildings.

The Honorary co-chairs for the Gala are Mr. Stephen Bechtel, Jr., Governor Edmund G. Brown, Jr., the Honorable Dr. Condoleezza Rice, and Mrs. Charlotte Mailliard Shultz

The honorary committee includes The Honorable Willie L. Brown, Jr., Assemblymember David Chiu, U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein, U.S. Senator Kamala D. Harris, San Francisco City Administrator Naomi Kelly, Dr. David M. Kennedy & Patricia Santa Cruz, San Francisco Supervisor Jane Kim, The Honorable Dr. Henry Kissinger, San Francisco Mayor Edwin M. Lee, Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom, Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the Assembly Anthony Rendon, Assemblymember Phil Ting, and The Honorable Ann M. Veneman.

The host committee includes Joachim and Nancy Hellman Bechtle, James Benedict, Jan Berckefeldt, The Honorable Dr. Michael & Chris Boskin, David Coulter & Susan Weeks, Linda C. Elliot, Stephen & Barbara Hearst, Donna Ewald Huggins, Janet Lamkin, Drs. Stephen & Maribelle Leavitt, Ray Lent, Jere Rae-Mansfield, Nicole DeLagnes McHugh & Stephen McHugh, Drs. Knox & Carlotta Mellon, Captain Chesley (Sully) & Lorrie Sullenberger, Andrea L. Van de Kamp, Ralph Walter, Meg Whitman & Dr. Griffith R. Harsh IV, and Diane B. Wilsey.

Major sponsors include the S.D. Bechtel, Jr. Foundation, Diane B. Wilsey, Bank of America, Fisher Family, Stephen & Barbara Hearst, Koret Foundation, Drs. Stephen & Maribelle Leavitt, Recology, Charles & Helen Schwab, Blum Family Foundation, Lauren & Alan Dachs, Dignity Health, EHDD, Gordon & Ann Getty, Gilead Sciences, Marcia & John Goldman, Will and Margaret Hearst, Nibbi Brothers, William & Susan Oberndorf, George & Linnea Roberts, Arthur & Toni Rembe Rock, Tom Steyer and Kat Taylor, Tad Taube, Laney & Pasha Thornton, Ralph Walter, Wells Fargo, and Meg Whitman & Griffith R. Harsh IV.

Proceeds from the Gala will support CHS programming and youth history education. The Gala coincides with CHS's current exhibitions on view through March 18, 2018 featuring Alexander Hamilton, on loan from the New-York Historical Society, and what was transpiring in Spanish Colonial California while Hamilton was shaping the foundation of the modern United States on the East Coast. A portion of the exhibition is dedicated to the history of the Old U.S. Mint in San Francisco, once part of the Treasury Department that Hamilton founded. CHS, in partnership with the City and County of San Francisco, is currently exploring the Old U.S. Mint as its future home.
