DETROIT, Mi. – Former Madera High School pitcher Alec Gamboa, who has spent the last six years moving through the minor league baseball system, will start for the Boston Red Sox this week in Detroit, Michigan. Originally drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 9th round and played one season in Korea, the former Coyote was signed by the Red Sox last December.
Before his time in minor league baseball, Gamboa played a season for Fresno State and appeared in 15 games for the Fresno City Rams in 2019, where he was credited with 8 wins and 1 loss. During his college career, he underwent Tommy John Surgery due to an elbow injury. After the success of the surgery, he began his minor league baseball career with the rookie league Arizona League Dodgers, recording a 2.88 ERA with 33 strikeouts in 12 games.
Gambpa followed that up with the next five seasons with the Dodgers organization from Single-A to Triple-A baseball in the Midwest. The Madera native was released by the Dodgers organization on May 13, 2025, to pursue an opportunity in South Korea. The next day, he signed with the Lotte Giants of the KBO League. He was named the league's top player for June after going 5-0 with a 1.72 ERA (both league-leading marks), and ranking second in innings pitched (31+1⁄3).
The Boston Red Sox are heading to Detroit for a three-game series against the Tigers starting Monday, May 4, 2026, at Comerica Park. The 29-year-old Gamboa is expected to pitch Tuesday or Wednesday evening. The games will be broadcast on SiriusXM Radio, the MLB PP, or for free using the TuneIn app. His family from Madera is expected to attend the game.
