MADERA - Madera Community College (MCC) celebrates its fifth anniversary of achieving recognition as California’s 116th community college. While the milestone marks five years of independent status, it reflects decades of educational service, community partnership, and regional impact. In July 2020, the California Community Colleges Board of Governors voted unanimously to designate Madera Community College as the 116th – and newest – campus in the state’s system. That decision recognized the growth, strength, and potential of a campus dedicated to expanding access to higher education.
Madera Community College began its journey in 1988 as the Madera Community College Center, offering classes in collaboration with Madera High School to meet the growing educational needs of residents in the northern region of the State Center Community College District.
In 1996, the college landed its permanent home on a 114-acre site generously donated by local landowners. Since then, the campus has grown into a vibrant center of learning and opportunity. MCC expanded its footprint into eastern Madera County with the addition of the Oakhurst Center. A beautiful new Oakhurst campus is under construction to serve the foothill and mountain communities.
“While we are officially five years into our journey as an independent college, our story began decades ago with a commitment to this community,” said Dr. Angel Reyna, president of Madera Community College. “Every step we take is rooted in the belief that education has the power to transform lives. Our students are at the heart of everything we do. Our programs, partnerships, and initiatives are designed to support their dreams, remove barriers, and open doors to opportunity. Together, we are building a future where every student has the tools and support to achieve their goals and uplift their families and communities.”
The college recently earned an eight-year accreditation – the highest term available – with special commendation for the campus’s efforts in creating a sense of belonging and community among students.
In addition to a well-rounded academic program, MCC offers a certificate program providing truck driver education and training for under $400. The campus is also launching an Agave Distillery Program to cultivate and distill agave, a drought-tolerant crop, and produce related products.
“Congratulations to everyone at Madera Community College on five incredible years!” said State Center Community College District Chancellor Dr. Carole Goldsmith, “This milestone is a testament to your unwavering commitment to students, community, and the power of education. You've created a place where dreams are nurtured, talents are discovered, and futures are forged. Here’s to the next chapter in your inspiring journey!”
State Center Community College District is home to the state’s first community college – Fresno City College – and its newest – Madera Community College.
